For each question, choose the correct answer.

Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are small, colorful birds, whose feathers seem to change colour when they fly.

Hummingbirds move their wings so fast that they make a humming noise, and it was the reason why they were named Hummingbirds.

Hummingbirds can hover when flying; this is they can stay in one place in the air, and while doing that, they can go up, down, to the right, to the left, backwards and even upside down.

Hummingbirds use their bill to get nectar from the centre of long flowers and use their tongue to lick the food at a rate up to 15 licks per second. Other things they eat are tree sap, insects and pollen.

Hummingbirds activity requires that they eat frequently, and in big amounts every day. They use their feet for perching; it’s the action of holding onto a tree, but they cannot use them for hopping or walking. Hummingbirds, just like other birds, use visual display for communicating.

There are different species of hummingbirds living in many different geographical areas, which is the main reason why it is hard to estimate an exact amount of hummingbird population existing today.

12 species of hummingbirds live in North America during the summer and in tropical areas during the winter.

Hummingbirds are very territorial; they even chase each other – they also have the courage to chase large birds such as hawks in order to make them go away from their territories.
