Summer Camp

Every year, my brother and I work at a summer camp for kids. We really enjoy seeing the kids do things which, at first, they think they are impossible, and if there were parents round, it would certainly be a little bit more difficult to get them done.

When the kids get to the camp, they immediately show that they can already do things like swimming, playing soccer, basketball or tennis. However, they discover other things in there; things like rock climbing, scuba diving and even canoeing, and by “discover” I mean they have the chance to have the “doing experience” and not the “I’ve heard of that one!”

One of the things we have to do first when the camping starts is encourage the kids because they feel nervous, sometimes scared, they feel like they are going to miss home or their parents a lot. The idea of being alone they bring from home is what makes them feel so, that’s why we must help them with that.

Some kids use their cellphones to help themselves cope with the process of getting used to this way of living... you know, being away from everything. We always tell them that there will be some specific times for them to call home, and as they get more involved in the camping activity, they tend to put their phones aside and eventually enjoy being there. However, we sometimes have the parents themselves calling to find out how their kids are doing. They usually say they miss them, which I think is good, but I just believe they must let their kids try more things on their own.

After some days, we get some kids telling us that the camp is awesome and that they are having a great time. The best part of it is when they say goodbye longing for staying longer. It’s not always that easy, though.
