Speaking – Health

1- Read the text in the bubble and talk.

 

2- Look, read and talk.

When you feel sick as a dog, are you alive and kicking or is your mood the opposite? 

Have you ever gone under the knife? Explain. 

What do you do when your mom feels sick? 

Where do you go when you are sick? Explain.

Have you ever spent a lot of money on a health situation? Explain.  

sick as a dog = extremely ill

alive and kicking = in good health despite health problems

go under the knife = undergo surgery


Are you afraid of needles?

Are you a healthy person?

Do you need a healthy lifestyle change?

Do you eat healthy food?

Do you do exercise? What kind of exercise do you do?

needle = a very fine slender piece of metal with a point at one end

and a hole or eye for thread at the other, used in sewing.


Do you ever get headaches? 

Do you go for regular medical check-ups? 

Do you have any allergies? 

Do you know anyone who suffers from backaches?


Do you go to the dentist’s twice a year? 

Do you take vitamins or mineral supplements?

Do you think pets are good for a person’s health? Explain. 

Have you ever been hospitalized? Explain.


3- Click on the pictures – They will take you to some phrases, idioms, and vocabulary talking about health.

  • Check out the new phrases and lexis you can use.
  • Take notes on phrases or words you don’t know or don’t remember.
  • Choose your favourite phrases/idioms and think about when you can use them.
  • Share with the class.

       

 

4- Watch the video and take notes.

  • Had you ever heard of these words?
  • Did you know any of them?

5- Look and talk.

  • According to the pictures, discuss the following questions:
    • Are people in your country overweight?
    • Is your country a healthy food country?
    • Have you ever donated blood? Do you think it is a good or bad practice?
    • Do you usually get enough sleep? Have you ever taken a sleeping pill to sleep better?

 

6- Read and talk.

  • To summarize, do people in your country have a healthy lifestyle? Why? / Why not?
  • If you were the Secretary of Health in your country, what would you do to improve health?

     

 

7- Watch the video and take notes.

  • Listen carefully and analyze the idioms and phrases.
  • Listen and write some of them that you would use when speaking in a regular conversation.
  • Pause the video when you need to.
  • Share with the class.

8- Look and think about a plan to improve health in your country.

  • Why do consider that your country needs this change?
  • Which activity/activities would you start with?
  • What would the benefits of this new health programme be?
  • Where can you start working with this programme? (Schools, jobs, public sector, etc.)

9- Share the information you got for your plan.

The teacher will comment on your sharing.

Some classmates will comment on your sharing.

Take notes on the comments.

You will need the comments to make some improving changes to your planning.


10- Watch the video and take notes.

  • Which place is the video referring to?
  • What is the main problem of this place referring to health?
  • Why are people unhealthy here?
  • What did the mayor of this place suggest to the citizens?
  • What can you see in winter in central park?
  • What is the high line? And what happened in 2006?
  • What can you do on the high line?
  • How many people are using bikes in the city?
  • What happens to the restaurant menus?
